SCOR runs a full calendar of events including :- Trials, Safaris, and the Premier 2 day navigational scatter known as the Ebble Valley Trail Randonnee. The Racing : Competitive Safaris

The racing takes place in a format known as 'Competitive Safari'. A Competitive Safari is a timed off road event where a cross-country course is marked out over route that can vary from 2 to 8 miles, depending on terrain. Competitors will be required to undertake a number of timed runs (usually about 10) during a set period.

The vehicles taking part vary from highly modified 4x4s, two wheel drive buggies and standard production 4x4s with safety modifications, such as roll cages, safety harnesses and fire extinguisher. Vehicles must pass scrutineering prior to competition and competitors must produce a current MSA competition license as well as a valid club membership card. Although it is possible to spend limitless amounts of money on a safari vehicle, competition on a limited budget is possible and indeed encouraged by SCOR!

The SCOR Championship is spilt into 4 classes; Class A - 4wd up to 2000cc, Class B - 4wd up to 2001cc to 3500cc, Class C - 4wd over 3501cc and Class D - 2wd any capacity.

The Car : Suzuki Vitara

We are running a 1600cc,16v Suzuki Vitara hardtop in class A of the SCOR Championship. The car has been built respecting the rules of the SCOR championship but has been modified so that it could run in the 'standard production' class of the AWDC and BORC championship.

The question many people have asked me is why a vitara? The simplest answer is because I already owned it! I'd often thought the Vitara is under rated as a 4x4. It made a good daily driver and should make a good racer; its small - so it doesnt take up too much space in the workshop and can fit between the trees on events, its relatively light, secondhand parts are now cheap and plentiful and its Japanese - so it should be reliable!

Video Equipment : recording the events

We are trying to make video clips of each of the events available on the site. This will give people an idea of what the events are like and what its like to be in the vitara during the race.

We record the in-car footage using a canon MV5i digital video camera with a small remote camera attached and connected via the composite video-in connection on the canon. The remote camera was bought from Ebay for about £10. Its powered by a PP3 battery and is about the size of a 50 pence piece allowing it to be easily moved around the car and tried in different positions whilst the main camera can be safely packed away in the glove box!

Once the event is over the video is edited using either Windows Movie Maker or Pinnacle Studio 9. It is then uploaded to the google video site where after a couple of days it can be viewed by all for free!
